Welcome to this comprehensive travel guide to Spain....

Spanish holiday resorts are one of the most popular tourism destinations in the world, attracting more than 50 million visitors each year. Most vacations include booking cheap flights to the Spanish "costas" for a couple of weeks of sun, sand, sangria and certain other delights guaranteed along Spain's Mediterranean coastline. The few who travel beyond the main tourist traps will uncover a treasure trove of culture, of rich and varied landscapes in this huge country of many contrasts where your holidays can be whatever you want it to be.

The Spanish tourist industry took flight in the 1960s with the birth of package holiday deals offering an irresistible combination of cheap air tickets, accommodation and car hire all included in a price which Joe Public could afford for the first time.

Nearly half a century on, Spanish tourism is still going from strength to strength based on the same formula. The heady mix of guaranteed sunshine and some of the cheapest hotels in the Mediterranean ensures the masses keep flocking to the golden beaches of the Iberian Peninsula and its islands in their millions.

Avoid the peak season periods of Easter, Christmas, July and August and you'll be able to pick up a discount air ticket and cheap hotel room in some of Spain's top tourist destinations for less than the price of a decent dinner in London.

Even in high season, there are plenty of incredible holiday bargains to be had in popular resorts such as Benidorm on the Costa Blanca, Lloret de Mar on the Costa Brava and Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol.

These resorts - and many more like them - are big, brash and very British (some 12 million Brits visit the country every year and more than 300,000 British ex-patriates have made the country their home).

This is the place of bronzed bodies soaked in sun cream on the beaches by day and well-oiled in the clubs by night. A country of aqua parks, banana rides, foam parties and fish and chips.

But go for a holiday deal that includes car rental and you'll find a different country - a country steeped in history and rich in culture with cities that boast some of the world's finest architecture and landscapes which quite literally take your breath away.

You only have to drive a short distance inland from most of the coastal resorts to find medieval mountain villages where life seems to have stood still for centuries.

Venture further afield from the costas to discover glorious Galicia in the north west corner of the country where the scenery is a mirror of the soulful south west of Ireland. It's also the place to savour the world's freshest and tastiest shellfish.

The mountain scenery and incessant sound of cowbells in Cantabria, in the north, will make you feel as if you've arrived in Switzerland. And in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the regions of Navarre and Aragon, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the highlands of Scotland.

Tour the magnificent Alpujarras, south of Granada (not for those with vertigo!), and you'll think you've stepped back in time 500 years to the days when the Moors used these incredibly beautiful mountains as their final stronghold.

The seriously rich and beautiful are more likely to be found sunning themselves on multi-million pound yachts moored in the swanky resort of Puerto Banus or the south west corner of Mallorca.

But that's the country for you. Millionaire heart throbs Michael Douglas and Antonio Banderas do it in style, budget-conscious backpackers do it on bicycles, and archetypal Essex girls simply can't get enough of it.
